In the heart of the captivating rolling fields, resided a young shepherd. His existence was mostly pure, and unsophisticated. His main role was to care for his herd of ewes.
Their gentle baas and the whispering of the gales among the single tree on the mountaintop were his main companions. Day in day, guarding his charges inculcated in him a notion of calm satisfaction.
Yet, there were the occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would yearn for company. On one such day from sheer monotony, the shepherd boy orchestrated a naughty plot.
Stories of wolves preying on sheep had been heard times and again in the village. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a joke on the inhabitants.
One afternoon he dashed into the village yelling “Wolf! There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” The terrified villagers sprinted up the hills here to help but discovered nothing threatening.
The boy chuckled at the dilemma on their faces. This prank laughed for a couple of more days. However, one morning, a real wolf actually charge at the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy ran for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his flock. Devastated, he returned to the town only to receive a reprimand on honesty and the results of crying wolf.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the risks of crying wolf. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once violated, is hard to earn back. It's a story as pertinent today as it was anciently.
